Backstage with Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood
On Friday night, before taking the stage at Bankers Life Fieldhouse for his second show in Indy, I was fortunate enough to take HANK FM listener, Eva, backstage to meet Garth and Trisha. It was a first for both of us.
There were six people in our group and before we piled into the elevator for something we’d only seen in our dreams, we were briefed on what was about to unfold at this ‘meet and greet’. “It will be unlike anything you’ve ever experienced,” said Laurie, one of the members on Garth’s team, and into the elevator we went.
After a quick ‘behind-the-scenes’ trip around Bankers Life Fieldhouse, our small group of 6 was handed off to another member of Garth’s team and ushered into a room that looked more like a living room. “Have a seat, make yourself comfortable – Garth and Trisha will be here soon." There were a couple of couches and a few chairs that had been placed to form a circle so we all took a seat. After about 5 minutes of talking to one another, I hear the door open.
“Hello! Sorry, I’m the opening act—he’ll be here in a minute... he’s just finishing up eating.” It was Trisha Yearwood!
Have you ever been so shocked, your brain and your mouth don’t meet on the same level? That was me.
She walked over to my chair, stuck her hand out and said, “Hi, I’m Trisha." I shook her hand, said hello, and was so blown away. I can’t even remember what I told her my name was. Trisha introduced herself to everyone in our group and then had a seat on one of the couches. I can’t speak for the others but I know I was thinking... "Is this really happening?"
Then, the door opens again... wearing a sweatshirt, jeans, and a ball-cap... in walks Garth Brooks. He was in the process of finishing a cookie and had another one in his opposite hand.
“Sorry I’m late—these cookies are amazing! Hi, I’m Mr. Yearwood.”
He reaches out to shake my hand and proceeds to do the same with everyone in our group, all the while, praising the cookies he’s enjoying. “Hold on," Garth says, “I’ll be right back.”
After less than a minute, he returns with a plastic container filled with the cookies and says, “You have to try these—they’re like a homemade version of thin mint cookies but with chocolate chips. Who wants a cookie?”
Again, my thoughts... "Is this really happening? We’re eating cookies with the King and Queen of Country Music… that THEY brought!!"
We sat and talked with Garth and Trisha for about 25 minutes, like we were all old friends who hadn’t seen each other in years. We talked about music, we talked about Peyton Manning, shared stories of fishing, and Eva got to share how she won her backstage passes. It was hands down, the coolest experience I’ve ever been a part of.
They’re genuine, compassionate, caring, giving, appreciative, humorous... two all-around incredible people who gave us a memory that will last forever.
At the end of the meet & greet we each got a picture with Garth and Trisha. They thanked us for being there, gave us all hugs, and then headed out to get ready for the show. Before our group was escorted back, their team gave us all bags that were filled with just about every item you’d find at the merchandise table that night.
I’ve heard and read so many great stories about how wonderful Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood are and every word is true. They’re genuine, compassionate, caring, giving, appreciative, humorous... two all-around incredible people who gave us a memory that will last forever.
