Mindy McCready's Ex Fighting For Custody Of Singer's First-Born Son
Mindy McCready's drama continues. The country singer's ex, Billy McKnight, is now stepping up his battle for custody of their six-year-old son, Zander. McKnight tells Florida's WBBH-TV that he's concerned for the boy's safety, because Mindy's life is "spinning out of control." McKnight says he's been trying to get custody of Zander for years. He adds that in recent months he's been struggling just to have access to the child, explaining that he last saw Zander in July and hasn't had any contact since November. McKnight, who prior to Zander's birth had been arrested for attempted murder following an attack on McCready, says last month's shooting death of Mindy's boyfriend has added a sense of urgency to his effort. He's now enlisted a group of lawyers to take his bid for custody to the Arkansas court.
Zander had been in the custody of Mindy's parents until November 2011, when Mindy took the boy from her father's home in Florida and fled to Arkansas. When police caught up with them -- hiding in a closet in the home of Mindy's then-boyfriend David Wilson -- Zander was turned over to authorities and expected to be returned to Mindy's mother in Florida. However, a judge instead awarded custody to Mindy, who at the time was pregnant with Wilson's child. Their son, Zayne, was born last April. Wilson died last month of a gunshot wound to the head. While McCready's camp has said David took his own life, police are still investigating the matter.
