Elvis Week Begins Friday
Thousands of Elvis Presley fans will be flocking to Memphis this weekend for the start of Elvis Week 2012, marking the 35th anniversary of his death. The nine days of activities begin Friday with several events, including an Elvis bobblehead giveaway at the Memphis Redbirds minor league baseball game and Round One of the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest. Conferences, concerts, fan club meetings, autograph sessions, charity events, movie screenings, and other Elvis-related activities are scheduled throughout the week. the Oak Ridge Boys' RIchard Sterban, who before joining the group was one of Elvis' backup singers, is among the special guests slated to appear at the event. Presley's widow Priscilla and daughter Lisa Marie Presley will also take part in various events, along with Wanda Jackson, Dickey Lee, and others.
The Candlelight Vigil, an annual procession along the driveway at Graceland past Elvis' gravesite, will begin Wednesday evening. The overnight gathering, on the eve of the anniversary of the rock icon's death, is the crowning point of Elvis Week. Presley suffered a heart attack while at Graceland, and passed away on August 16th, 1977. He was 42.
