Mel McMahon

HOMETOWN: Born and raised in Indianapolis, IN, but went to an all-girls boarding school run by nuns for high school in Ferdinand and lived in Bloomington for undergrad. Indiana girl through and through!

CAREER HISTORY:  I started as a receptionist at a radio station in Bloomington my senior year of college, and I did everything but answer the phone!  Since then, I have been a VJ on a music television station, worked in promotions, was an account executive, a traffic reporter, show host, producer, and more. I was also on a nationally syndicated dating show—I won.

FAVORITE CONCERT I’VE EVER BEEN TO:  That’s a tough one! I have lots. Tom Petty at Verizon Wireless Music Center, Kings of Leon at Bonnaroo, Violent Femmes at The Vogue, Modest Mouse in Bloomington, most Dave Matthews Band shows, Miranda Lambert/Keith Urban/Luke Bryan at Klipsch Music Center…. Basically, I love live music. My favorite concerts are the music festival type that allow you to see all different kinds of artists.  I have a broad musical taste, so I enjoy lots of different artists and venues.

INTERESTS: Right now my main interest is my son that was born on April 4, 2015. My entire world revolves around him! (He loves music, long walks around the block, and Curious George).

MOVIES:  I love all different kinds of movies. Comedies, rom-coms, action, documentaries—you name it. My husband makes sure we see every Marvel Comics movie as soon as they come out. I’m still waiting for him to take me to see Pitch Perfect 2.

TELEVISION:  My favorite shows change every season, but right now, I am really into Nashville, Downtown Abbey, The Black List, The Goldbergs and any Project Runway rerun.  I’m also a big fan of PBS, so I like a lot of documentaries and educational stuff.  I’m trying to make up for not paying enough attention in school.

HEROES:  I find inspiration in all different kinds of people. Anyone with conviction, a good heart, and a dream they go after is a hero in my book.

BOOKS OR MAGAZINES:  I’m really trying to get back in to reading books. It was hard with always being on the go, but now, I use the time that my little one is asleep in my arms to get at least a few pages in!

LITTLE KNOWN FACT ABOUT ME:  I don’t think such a thing exists… I’m an open book. People seem surprised when I tell them I have never been to Las Vegas. (I guess I have the personality of a girl that has been to Vegas)?

COOLEST CELEBRITY I EVER MET: I have a few… Lenny Kravitz—that guy radiates cool. Jake Owen, one of the nicest guys of all time. I’m still waiting to meet Ellen.

ADDICTION:  Talking?

FAVE LOCAL BARS:  Anywhere with a patio, but Lockerbie Pub is my all-time, longtime, no other bar is better bar.

FAVE LOCAL RESTAURANTS:  I honestly can’t give out an award for this—I love, love, love local. So much so that my husband and I started a directory of locally owned and operated businesses that were started in Indiana called IndianaOriginals.com. We try new restaurants as often as we can afford!

FAVE LOCAL HANG OUT:  My front yard, on a blanket with just birds, baby coos, and music in the background.

DREAM VACATION: I would love to take a cruise around the world, but I will settle for a beach with no Wi-Fi access. Completely unplugging every once in a while is important.

FAVE ESCAPE:  My husband grew up on a farm in the middle of no-where Indiana. I love when we stay the night at his parent’s house. No cell service, most of the time the Internet doesn’t work, and we don’t have a care in the world.

FAVE THING ABOUT WORK:  Radio isn’t work. Radio is getting to hang out and connect with awesome people every day.

TYPICAL BREAKFAST:   Carnation Instant Breakfast and some fruit. I’m trying to cut back on the coffee.

HOW I SPEND MY FREE TIME:  My family spends a lot of time exploring Indiana. We will drive to Madison just to have dinner, head to a festival in Tippecanoe County, or go visit friends in Ferdinand. We love random road trips, trying out new restaurants, and meeting new people.

LIKE TO COOK?  I once started a fire and a flood making Ramen noodles, but I have come a loooooong way since my college days. My husband is an amazing cook, so I prefer to eat his food. I will bake cakes, cookies, and breads all day long though.

THREE NAMES I GO BY:   Mel, Babe, and Mama.

THREE THINGS THAT SCARE ME:  1) Those grates in the sidewalks (I will never walk over them)   2) Losing my voice   3) The movie “Ernest Scared Stupid.” It’s the only move that every really scared me. Those trolls still give me nightmares.

THREE OF MY EVERYDAY ESSENTIALS:  1) Seeing my little guy’s smile in the morning 2) A kiss from my husband   3) Mascara. I never leave the house without mascara on.

THREE THINGS TO DO BEFORE I DIE:  1) Pay off student loans 2) Visit all 50 states 3) Run a mile without stopping.
